The 2022 Subaru Outback returns with a pair of four-cylinder engines and standard all-wheel drive. Each version also gets a continuously variable transmission.

We think the 2022 Subaru Outback Premium model has the best complement of standard and optional features for the price. Although it’s only available with the 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine, upgrades to a 260-horsepower turbocharged engine cost at least $6,000.

The mid-level Premium version offers plenty of features at a competitive price, but if you’re on a tight budget, we recommend the Onyx Edition XT. It has more features than the 2022 Subaru Outback Premium version and benefits from a more powerful turbo engine.

This is a trade-off with improved performance, but I know it’s not for everyone, especially those who travel long distances.

More comfortable on the road
When ground clearance increases by 0.8 inches to 9.5 inches and off-road focus occurs, the suspension weakens in the wild, resulting in softer handling. Fortunately, the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is still straight as an arrow, but the curbs are unnoticeable and there is a slight lift at highway speeds. The tires and padded suspension also seem to affect handling. In everyday driving, the wildlife is better than in the normal hinterland, but special attention needs to be paid to the types of routes you can take to climb mountains and trails.

These changes do not make the wild a true rocky crawler. Subaru likes to point out that ground clearance is close to what’s available on other off-road vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner (9.6 inches) and Jeep Wrangler. Sport (9.7 inches), but the other clearance is late. The 4Runner’s approach angle is 30 degrees, and the Wrangler Sport’s least off-road-oriented approach angle is 41.4 degrees, more than double the Wild’s.
Most people considering wildland landing capacity will be happy with the upgrade, especially the booster roof rack that can hold up to 700 pounds (more than enough for a rooftop tent). But for those who want to dig deeper into the unknown, there are other options with more insight into this area.

Wilderness is based on the Onyx Edition XT trim level and offers a very solid list of standard equipment.
