2023 Ford Super Duty. Ford will release a brand-new F-series Super Duty, the next generation of its heavy-duty pickup truck, in 2023. New exterior and interior designs, new technology, and new powertrain options help the new Super Duty remain competitive in the fiercely competitive truck market. Ford claims that the 2023 Super Duty will have the highest engine output, as well as the highest towing and payload ratings, of any big-muscle HD pickup.

Depending on its configuration, the Super Duty is capable of hauling up to 8,000 pounds of payload or towing a trailer weighing up to 40,000 pounds. These efforts are complemented by an abundance of new technologies that make driving and towing safer and more convenient, such as a blind-spot monitoring system for fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailering. The Super Duty also boasts an industry-first “tailgate down” backup camera and 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.

What’s Different in 2023?

Ford‘s heavy-duty pickup truck is redesigned from the wheels up for the 2023 model year, and it also receives updated engines. The 7.3-liter V-8’s air intake and tuning have been revised, and there is a brand-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel engine. The exterior of the new 2023 Ford Super Duty adopts the same design language as Ford‘s smaller F-150 and Maverick pickup trucks, including the brand’s signature “C-clamp” lighting. We are pleased to report that the Super Duty utilizes functional side vents as opposed to trendy imitations. The interior features a redesigned dashboard, a new digital instrument cluster, and an infotainment screen measuring up to 12.0 inches. In addition, four-wheel drive is now standard on the XLT and Lariat, not just the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited models. On the base XL, rear-wheel drive is still standard.

The 2023 Super Duty lineup retains the same trim level configuration as its predecessor. We’re inclined to recommend the mid-level Lariat because it offers valuable creature comforts, such as LED lighting, power front seats, a 360-degree camera package, and a B&O audio system, at a more affordable price than the pricier King Ranch and Platinum models.

Powertrain, Engine, and Performance

The standard V-8 engine now has a displacement of 6.8 liters, up from 6.2, and is said to have enhanced low-end torque. While the larger 7.3-liter gas-powered engine receives a couple of minor upgrades, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel with 500 horsepower and 1200 lb-ft of torque captures our attention.

In addition to a new turbocharger and enhanced exhaust manifolds, the Power Stroke engine features a distinct tuning and a new turbocharger. Each available engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford has not yet disclosed horsepower or torque figures for any of the Super Duty’s engines, but the company’s claim that the truck will have the class’s most powerful engine will undoubtedly apply to the Power Stroke diesel.

2023 Ford Super Duty Towing Capacity and Payload

Ford claims that the 2023 Super Duty has the highest towing and payload capacities in its class. The Super Duty has a maximum payload capacity of 8,000 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 40,000 pounds. To manage all of this capability, the manufacturer has equipped the truck with a variety of trailering-assist components. Among these are onboard scales equipped with Smart Hitch, which estimate cargo weight in real time and provide guidance on trailer tongue-weight distribution. Trailer Navigation can optimize travel routes based on the dimensions and weight of the trailer.

In addition to being able to tow up to 40,000 pounds and carry up to 8,000 pounds, the new Ford Super Duty is equipped with a number of technological features that make towing and hauling significantly easier. These features include Trailer Navigation, an integrated generator, and Onboard Scales.

Energy Efficiency and Real-World MPG

Since the EPA does not test vehicles as heavy as the Super Duty and its enormous competitors, we conduct our own tests to evaluate them. Now that Ford has revamped the powertrain options for its heavy-duty pickup trucks, we will have to wait until we can get our hands on the new models before we can evaluate their real-world mpg on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route. We anticipate the Power Stroke diesel to be the most fuel-efficient engine in the Super Duty lineup.

2023 Ford Super Duty Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

The new interior design is an improvement over that of the 2022 model, but buyers of the base XL trim should still expect a relatively bare cabin. However, as you progress through the trim levels, more convenience and luxury features become available, and Ford has designed front seats that recline nearly flat so that drivers can properly rest when stopped overnight on long-distance drives. Ford has not yet released a comprehensive list of the 2023 Super Duty’s interior features and options, but we will update this article once we have more information.

Informational Entertainment and Connectivity

The base XL trim comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system, while more expensive models feature a 12-inch display. Also available is a reconfigurable 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Ford has integrated a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, fleet management software, and onboard telematics to help businesses track the location of their trucks and assist drivers with maintenance. Each model includes a Bang & Olufsen–tuned audio system. Standard is a 640-watt, eight-speaker system; optional is a 1080-watt, 18-speaker system.
