Currently, the new 2023 Mercedes SL has been spied on during a road test in Germany. However, it is still a prototype. The new SL-Class has the same platform as the Mercedes-AMG GT. For this reason, the road holding and performance should be much better than the previous generation. Details are scarce so far, but many people are expecting a smart, elegant interior and a six- or eight-cylinder engine. It is hoped that the new car will feature a retractable fabric roof, to replace the electric hard roof found in the last generation.
2023 Mercedes SL Restyle
Recent spy photos show that the overall design is inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL known for its impressive proportions. The car has a long hood, short rear deck and a taller axle-to-dashboard ratio. The combination results in an elegant look. The front design is elegant and bold, a look typical of the Mercedes-AMG GT.

There is no indication that Mercedes will add a retractable hardtop to the new SL. Some sources even said that instead of using a folding hardtop, the SL will use a convertible canvas topped cover. Again, there is no evidence of this due to the heavy camouflage covering the top. There aren’t many details about the interior of the new 2023 Mercedes SL-Class, but since it’s a Mercedes, it’s believed that the interior will feature genuine leather, metal and wood.
2023 Mercedes SL Engine
The German automaker is expected to borrow two sets of new Mercedes SL-class engines from other performance cars. The SL53 may be powered by the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 429 horsepower in the E53 sedan. Meanwhile, the more powerful SL63 is the GT’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that will amplify the more powerful SL63. This engine can make 577 small horsepower.
These engines allow the revitalized SL models to compete against convertible versions of the Lexus LC and BMW 8 Series, both of which have powerful V-8s, as well as sportier rivals, such as the Maserati Gran Turismo Convertible and Audi R8.
