2023 Nissan Frontier, Pro 4X Full Review New

2023 Nissan Frontier. With styling prompted by the original Nissan Hardbody compact pickup from the 1980s, the boxy Nissan Frontier is its best in years. Although the Frontier is newer than the mid-size pickups it competes with, such as the Ford Ranger and the Honda Ridgeline, it has the appearance and feel of an older truck. Every Frontier is equipped with a 310-hp V-6 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. The Frontier is available as an extended King Cab or a four-door crew cab; the standard bed length is either 5.0 or 6.0 feet long. Nissan‘s midsize pickup remains a good value, from a powerful base Frontier S work truck to a gravel-flinging Pro-4X off-roader with Bilstein dampers and skid plates. Although the Frontier cannot tow as much as the Toyota Tacoma, its extensive standard safety features and LED lighting give it a competitive edge in today’s truck market.

2023 Nissan Frontier Exterior

Nissan has made only minor equipment modifications for 2023, as the Frontier entered its third generation last year. A Midnight Edition exterior package is now available, but only on crew cab SV models. The package includes black 17-inch wheels, black exterior mirrors, and other darkened interior and exterior accents. The SV Crew Cab with long bed now comes standard with the previously optional SV Convenience package. This package includes a heated leather steering wheel, heated front seats, a spray-in bed liner, and bed lighting beneath the bed’s rails. Apple CarPlay wireless connectivity is now standard on Pro-X and Pro-4X models, and the Pro Premium package now includes Lava Red contrast stitching.

We believe that the SV trim has the best combination of standard features and value. Our ideal configuration begins with the larger of the two available cab sizes and four-wheel drive: the crew cab. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, but we would add the Convenience and Technology packages to our truck. They include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automated emergency braking, heated front seats and steering wheel, a trailer hitch, cargo bed lights, and a spray-on bed liner.

The Frontier Pro-4X is equipped with robust skid plates, off-road tires, and specialized shock absorbers. It also has a ground clearance of 9.8 inches and an electronically locking rear differential for enhanced traction. Although it lacks the extreme off-road software and hardware of the Tacoma TRD Pro and Gladiator Rubicon, the 2023 Nissan Frontier is capable of traversing a variety of rough terrain.

2023 Nissan Frontier Powertrain, Engine, and Performance

Nissan‘s new naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 made its debut on the 2020 model year’s final generation of the Frontier. 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque are produced by the engine. It is equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. According to our initial driving impressions, the Frontier’s V-6 provides adequate thrust and a smooth driving experience. Even though it is not as capable as the Jeep Gladiator, we drove the off-road-oriented Pro-4X model, which is eager to tackle difficult terrain. In addition, we enjoyed the Nissan‘s new, quicker and more direct steering, as well as the numerous chassis enhancements that have made the truck feel more composed and refined on the move.

Towing Capacity and Payload

The 2023 Nissan Frontier maximum towing capacity is 6720 pounds, which is less than competitors such as the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Jeep Gladiator, which can all tow at least 7650 pounds. Maximum payload for the Nissan is 1,610 pounds.

Energy Efficiency and Real-World MPG

The rear-wheel-drive Frontier is rated at 18 city mpg and 24 highway mpg. With four-wheel drive, fuel economy drops to 17 city mpg and 22 highway mpg. 20 mpg was achieved by a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X on our 75 mph highway test route as part of our extensive testing regimen. Visit the EPA’s website for more information about the Frontier’s fuel economy.

Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

Thankfully, the interior design and materials of the 2023 Nissan Frontier are a vast improvement over the dated and plastic-laden cabin that plagued its predecessor. Not only did Nissan add much-needed snazzier trim pieces and soft-touch surfaces, but the company also added more modern features. The instrument cluster’s analog gauges have been replaced with a larger, 7.0-inch color display. Also available are a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Speaking of seats, the Frontier’s Nissan Zero Gravity thrones continue to support our posteriors. The interior cubby storage includes a bin atop the dashboard and a compartment beneath the rear seat. The truck is available with two wheelbase lengths that provide a short and long cargo bed, the former measuring just under five feet and the latter extending just under six feet.

The Frontier’s comfortable ride quality is the highlight of this automobile. Large dips and bumps are easily absorbed at high speeds, and the Frontier maintains its composure in the city. Other elements of the Frontier are less refined. The padding on the front seats is a bit too firm and flat, and the lack of seat adjustments may make it difficult to find a comfortable seating position.

Some drivers will find it difficult to find a comfortable seating position in the Frontier because it lacks a telescoping steering wheel. Adult rear passengers will not enjoy the Frontier’s rear legroom, which is definitely on the tight side. Visibility to the exterior is average for its class. The Frontier offers an optional surround-view camera system. The camera views are disappointingly low-resolution and grainy, which can make parking more difficult.

Informational Entertainment and Connectivity

The infotainment system of the new Frontier operates via a standard 8.0-inch or optional 9.0-inch touchscreen. Below the screen, there are two physical knobs for adjusting the stereo’s volume and tuning. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, multiple charging outlets, and a USB-C port are among the most desirable standard connectivity features. The Frontier is also available with a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone charging via subscription. The sound system can be upgraded for an additional fee to a nine-speaker Fender unit.

All Frontiers come standard with driver aids like driver attention warning, automatic emergency braking, and trailer sway control. The tested pickup truck included a number of packages that included lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist, a surround-view camera, and adaptive cruise control. We found the systems to be functional and free of false alarms.

2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X

The Japanese automaker will start selling the 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X along with the standard model next summer. This off-road version will be equipped with more advanced features, a more aggressive front end and an improved chassis. Both upgrades will undoubtedly make the truck more attractive and modern. The Nissan Frontier is a bestseller, with annual sales growth.

The next model will undoubtedly be no different. Likewise, the truck cab could be more modern, with a sleeker design and greater usability than the base model. Under the hood of the 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is a powerful V6 engine with class-leading performance.

2023 Frontier Pro-4X looks amazing

The 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X profile is more upright than the two-wheeled Pro-X look. For example, the new Pro-4X has an electronic rear differential lock that improves grip in bad weather and on tough roads.

Moreover, it is equipped with three floor plates and a ground clearance slightly higher than the previous model. In addition, Nissan will enhance the exterior appearance with new and unique highlights, orange Nissan badges and other improvements. Overall, the design is more attractive and aggressive than the standard or Pro-X models, with the Pro-4X looking more welcoming.

2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X V6 Engine Specifications

The upcoming 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X will share the same engine as the regular Frontier. It features a reliable 3.8-liter V6 engine that produces 310 horsepower. Additionally, the motor delivers 280 lb-ft of torque. A powerful V6 petrol engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission is also available. In recent tests, the Pro-4X hasn’t outperformed the stock model. The Pro-4X has been reported to use more fuel, but this information will have to wait for Nissan to provide it. Either way, if you’re looking for a more capable all-terrain vehicle, Nissan‘s Pro-4X is your best bet.
