If that’s what you want, this is an excellent way to get it. But it is not the best choice for a lot of miles off-road. The optional V-6 engine gets you fairly fast. The six-speed automatic transmission has learned some new tricks since the last generation.

It’s noisy with lurking turmoil creeping into the suburban streets. Rogue’s chassis was a bit sturdier than Pathfinder, allowing for a bit more movement after each impact. Wiesenfelder did not go that far.

We didn’t get the Rogue S and Pathfinder involved in the same crash to test the higher models. If a car hits something in front or behind, you don’t know exactly what you’re hitting because the driver has no control over the collision.

The Pathfinder’s front row materials replace the ubiquitous, stiff plastics of the previous generation with generous padding.

Much of it is decorated with double stitching. A pair of leather cushions enhance the front seats. This touch is for show only, but the decorative perforated material makes a more luxurious impression than the hard plastic of the previous model. The second row retains the comfortable seating position of its predecessor and ample headroom for taller passengers.

While the electronic gear selector and drive mode button were a bit loose in our test car, the other controls seemed ready to go. The silver accents of the cab are attractively polished and it’s nice to see the quality extend beyond platinum.

We tasted the quality of SL with a base leather cover instead of semi-aniline cowhide in platinum. The seats are firm but supportive. There are not many reinforcements. More of a gentle curve that curves around your body. Seat bottoms are slightly higher than the backrests to provide more thigh support.

This, combined with the long wheelbase, makes the ride as comfortable as it is quiet and smooth. However, the materials were consistent throughout – which is a good step in the right direction given the trim level cuts. The new interior of the Pathfinder is better than its predecessor and can now compete with the best in its class. The dashboard has a clean, modern design, with many soft-touch surfaces throughout. While hard plastics may be present, they are hidden in less visible places.

The overall build quality is solid and high quality. Insulation is good for reducing wind noise and road noise.

You can choose between a standard 8-inch touchscreen or an optional 9-inch screen for the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder SL.

However, it can sometimes slow down on moderate starts and make the engine red during low-speed acceleration at embarrassingly low revs. Without the driver feeling unstable, the powertrain can produce enough low torque for such situations.
