2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition engine
The second-generation GR86 builds on the great reputation of the first generation and brings more fun to an affordable sports car with a new 2.4-liter engine that delivers 11% more horsepower and 18% more torque than the first-generation 2.0-liter. Model. The 2.4-liter engine produces 228 horsepower (versus 205 in the 2.0-liter) and 184 lb-ft. torque (versus 156 on the previous generation). Crucially, the new engine is tuned to reach peak torque in the powerband much earlier, at 3,700 rpm, versus 6,600 rpm before it. The result is a more responsive and powerful driving experience in all situations.
This more powerful engine improves acceleration from zero to 60 from 7.0 to 6.1 seconds for the six-speed manual and 8.0 to 6.6 seconds for the six-speed Electronically Available Intelligent Automatic Transmission (ECT-i). EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 20 city/27 highway/22 mpg for the manual transmission and 21 city/31 highway/25 mpg for the automatic.
By combining direct and port injection technologies, Toyota’s D-4S dual-injection delivers a cooling effect in the cylinders and delivers an ultra-high compression ratio of 12.5:1 for maximum power. Port fuel injectors operate during light and medium loads to help increase combustion efficiency. The increased capacity of the exhaust system’s center pipe produces a satisfying sound, with in-cab engine noise amplified by the Active Audio Control system.

2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition exterior is light, sturdy and elegant
For the second generation 2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition, the GR engineering team reworked the chassis and body to complement the engine’s improved performance. Strategic chassis reinforcements and the use of structural adhesives resulted in a 50% increase in torsional rigidity over the previous generation 86. A full-ring rear frame connects the upper and lower chassis, and a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel and aluminum is used strategically throughout the frame.
Extensive use of aluminum in the bodywork kept the weight down to just a few pounds compared to the previous generation model, even as the new cars’ increased strength, safety and comfort. The GR86 uses an aluminum hood, front fenders and a roof panel, as opposed to only the hood of the previous generation model. The increased use of aluminum in the bodywork has lowered the already low center of gravity by an additional 1.6 mm. This seemingly small difference pays off in steering response and agility.
Low weight, an extremely low center of gravity and balance of 53% at the front and 47% at the rear combine to create a pure driver’s car. The 2023 GR86 weighs just 2811 pounds with the manual transmission and 2851 pounds with the automatic transmission.
Additional examples of the versatility of the second-generation GR86 include a resin fuel fill valve, new lightweight front-seat tires, redesigned power steering, and changes to the powertrain and engine.
2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition driven by control
The Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system with an integrated column-mounted motor and control unit reduces weight and space. A solid gearbox mount improves the driver’s direct steering feel, and the high-speed transmission delivers only 2.5 turns from lock to lock for tight maneuverability.
Sport-tuned independent MacPherson front springs with improved damping performance and internal rebound springs for improved handling characteristics. The double-wishbone multi-link rear suspension uses stiffer springs and sport-tuned dampers for a stable, predictable ride. Both GR86 versions are equipped with 11.6-inch power-assisted ventilated disc brakes at the front and 11.4-inch ventilated rear.
2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition High performance
Sports car enthusiasts will love the 2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition’s six-speed manual transmission. With the push of a button, drivers can activate lane mode or disable Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). The carbon synchronizer improves shifting to fourth gear. The transmission uses low-viscosity oil and bearings for smooth shifting with increased torque for the 2.4-liter Boxer engine.
As for the six-speed automatic transmission, the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters provide driving enthusiasts a dynamic driving experience. Drivers can choose between Normal, Sport or Snow mode. In Sport mode, the transmission senses brake and throttle action and vehicle behavior to automatically select the optimal gear, giving drivers the control they want. Additional clutch plates and a new high-capacity torque converter ensure smooth delivery of the higher power and torque from the 2.4-liter engine.
With both transmissions, the 2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition is equipped with a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential to improve cornering traction.
2023 Toyota GR86 Special Edition Driver-focused technology and comfort

The contents of the display depend on whether the drivers are in Normal, Sport, Snow or Track mode. (Track mode only comes with the manual transmission.) Selecting Sport mode will illuminate a red ring around the speedometer for a powerful look. Track mode was developed with driver input. When selected, the instrument panel will prominently display the RPM bezel in the center, along with the oil and water coolant temperatures and cycle timer.
The small-diameter leather-wrapped steering wheel includes audio system controls, hands-free calling, voice recognition, display gauges and cruise control. Electrically operated windows are equipped with automatic up / down and pinch protection. The two-part center console offers cup holders or storage if needed, with auxiliary audio and two USB ports inside. The automatic transmission model also has an open central stowage area.
