2024 Jeep Recon is not a substitute for Wrangler

2024 Jeep Recon. Thursday, Jeep unveiled its electrification plans, announcing a comprehensive initiative to supercharge its lineup and launch a series of fully electric vehicles. The first Jeep Recon sold in the United States will be a small, square SUV.

The boxy SUV, depicted here as a concept, will take cues from the Wrangler to appeal to diehard Jeep fans. As with the current Wrangler, the doors and windows will be removable, and a one-touch power top will enable the open-air driving experience that Jeep owners are accustomed to. Additionally, the 2024 Jeep Recon will be equipped with “e-locker” technology to simulate locking differentials, a Selec-Terrain traction system with multiple drive modes, underbody skid pads, and off-road tires. On the basis of the more regular crossover footprint and the instantaneous drive modes, the Recon’s offerings appear to be more in line with the TrailHawk trims of Jeep‘s mainstream models than with the straightforward, hard-core Wrangler.

The Recon’s seriousness as a vehicle will not be known until the production model is unveiled next year. You will be able to place an order at that time, but production will not begin until 2024. The electric Jeep will be available globally.

The Recon is not a substitute for the Jeep Wrangler.

The 2024 Jeep Recon is “inspired by the Wrangler,” according to Jeep. Despite the similar boxy shape, this vehicle is not a Wrangler, nor is it supposed to replace the Wrangler. Based on the current Wrangler, Jeep has been experimenting with bizarre concepts. However, these concepts did not appear production-ready, and it is unlikely that Jeep will offer a two-door, 600-hp EV with a manual transmission.

With the Recon in its lineup, Jeep would have more time and room to consider how to reimagine its icon for a new era. And because it is not the Wrangler, Jeep is also free to explore sensible options such as authoritative front and rear suspension.

This Wrangler-inspired four-wheel-drive vehicle appears to be a cross between a classic Cherokee XJ and a modern Wrangler Rubicon, with the former’s boxy roofline and the latter’s mostly faired-in bodywork and full front end with squared-off headlights. It rides on Stellantis’ brand-new STLA platform, which is unlike either of those conventional SUVs. Yes, this indicates that the suspension is fully independent, as opposed to the antiquated live axles. Jim Morrison, the head of Jeep, asserts that the Recon will be “Rubicon [trail]-ready right out of the gate” despite being a diesel-powered vehicle.

Expect

Expect electronic locking differentials (e-locker axle technology), Selec-Terrain traction management functions, skidplates, tow hooks, and beefy tires, according to Jeep. The Recon, like the Wrangler, can be field-stripped to a more natural state, with removable doors and a sliding fabric roof panel that retracts to expose nearly the entire roof to the sun and stars. Big tires and extremely short overhangs almost guarantee that the Recon has enviable approach, departure, and breakover angles, which are essential indicators of off-road prowess.

Given the Recon’s apparent overlap with the Wrangler, you may wonder whether it will eventually replace the Wrangler. Nope. Jeep is adamant that this is not the case, and adds that the Recon is designed to attract new and different customers than the “icon” Wrangler. Stellantis design leader Ralph Gilles acknowledges that the Wrangler heavily influenced the Recon; we believe it makes sense for one of Jeep‘s first all-electric SUVs to attempt to leverage some of the Wrangler’s magic.

2024 Jeep Recon will be available.

In 2023, Jeep will debut the production 2024 Jeep Recon. Reservations will commence in early 2023, and according to Jeep, Recon production will commence in 2024. It should play a significant role in Jeep‘s plan to achieve 50 percent EV sales by 2030.

Jeep plans to manufacture the Recon in North America. Assuming the vehicle meets the requirements for price and battery source, it should be eligible for a federal tax credit under the IRA.

2024 Jeep Recon EV

Overview

Electric vehicles have made their mark in nearly every segment, including full-size pickup trucks, station wagons, and luxury SUVs. However, the 2024 Jeep Recon EV will be able to climb rocks. The four-wheel-drive Recon EV is a fully electric mid-size SUV with a currently offered power-folding roof and easily removable doors. It was inspired by the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. Other than the Wrangler, the only pony with such capabilities is the Ford Bronco. Initial images depict a spare tire mounted to the tailgate, but price, range, battery size, and total power output have not yet been disclosed. However, details such as an illuminated seven-slot front grille, beefy BFGoodrich T/A tires, and seating for up to five people on rubberized flooring are visible. We will update this section as our own Jeep Recon information gathering mission continues. In the interim, we await the initial production date of the Recon EV, which is set for sometime in 2024.

What’s Different in 2024?

The Recon EV will join the forthcoming Wagoneer EV as one of two new electric models in the Jeep lineup. We anticipate that the Jeep Recon EV will be roughly the same size as the latest Jeep Wrangler or Grand Cherokee with two rows. Jeep reports that the 2024 Jeep Recon EV will be available for reservation in early 2023, with a production date in 2024.

Jeep has not yet disclosed the starting price of the Recon EV, but we believe it will be more expensive than the gasoline-powered Wrangler. Given its likely off-road capability, there is a good chance that the 2024 Jeep Recon EV will adopt the Wrangler’s trim structure, beginning with the entry-level Sport trim and swiftly ascending in price and luxury to the Sahara High Altitude model. When we have more information about the Recon EV’s price and available features, we will update this article.
