2024 Polestar 2 Review Full Update

2024 Polestar 2. The all-electric Polestar 2 hatchback wears the stylish attire of a luxury sedan, like the Volvo S60, but it was designed for a world without gasoline. Polestar, Volvo‘s electric vehicle business, delivers the 2’s base model a healthy balance of range and horsepower. The standard rear-drive Polestar 2 has 299 horsepower and a claimed range of 300 miles. Two all-wheel-drive Polestar 2 hatchbacks are offered, one with 421 horsepower and the enthusiast-oriented 450 horsepower Performance Pack edition.

Both have a manufacturer-estimated range of 270 miles. The Polestar 2 is priced far higher than the base Tesla Model 3, but it has a longer range than Elon Musk’s baby. The Polestar sports a more conventional cockpit than the Tesla, replete with a conventional instrument cluster and Android-based software. While the Polestar 2 has steadily improved its features, range, and horsepower with each new model year, it must continue to improve in order to remain competitive with other emerging electric vehicles such as the BMW i4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

2024 Polestar 2 Review

Polestar upgrades the range of its all-electric 2 for 2024 with a larger battery and improved gear. The previously front-wheel-drive, single-motor Polestar 2 is now rear-wheel drive. And reportedly gains 30 miles of range for a total of 300. Compared to last year, dual-motor Polestar 2 versions now have a claimed range of 270 miles, an increase of 10 miles. All tiers’ motors have been improved, resulting in a rise in horsepower. The single-motor Polestar 2 now has 299 horsepower (an increase from 231). While the dual-motor model now has 421 horsepower (from 408).

We enjoy that. In addition, Polestar has retuned the torque ratio, giving the rear motor output priority. The 20-inch forged wheels that come with the Performance Package have been upgraded, and 19-inch wheels are now available with Michelin all-season tires. The larger battery now supports DC-fast charging speeds of up to 205 kW maximum.

The rear-wheel-drive, single-motor Polestar 2 has sufficient range to forego evening recharging, and its 299 horsepower make it nimble. While the Performance Pack stokes the fires of enthusiasts, it comes at the expense of overall range, so rather than racing to the next charge, we’d argue that a lower price and greater range are more valuable than the difference in Polestar 2’s maximum performance.

2024 Polestar 2 EV Motor, Performance, and Power

The rear wheels of the Polestar 2 are driven by a single motor producing 299 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive variants have two motors with a combined output of 421 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. For thrill-seekers, a Performance Pack is offered with 455 peak horsepower for maximum acceleration. We have not yet tested a 2024 Polestar 2 with these enhanced motors, but we anticipate more aggressive performance than the base, single-motor model from last year, which reached 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The Performance variant also comes fitted with 20-inch wheels and summer tires. Firmer suspension components as well as adjustable Öhlins dampers, and enhanced Brembo front brakes. Polestar also delivers three levels of regenerative braking. With the strongest capable of bringing the car to a complete stop without you pressing the brake. While the aforementioned Performance Pack is designed for enthusiasts, we believe the 2 rides better with the standard suspension.

2024 Polestar 2 Range, Battery Charging, and Lifespan

The 2 sits on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as the gasoline-powered Volvo XC40 crossover. But the electrified version of the platform includes a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery for all-wheel drive vehicles and a bigger 79 kWh battery for rear-drive single-motor cars. The electrical system permits fast charging up to 205 kilowatts with the huge battery. But Polestar claims the 75 kWh battery can be recharged from dead to 80 percent in 40 minutes. The single-motor variant has an estimated range of 300 miles. And the dual-motor version is rated at 270 miles of range on a single charge.

2024 Polestar 2 Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The 2024 Polestar 2 hasn’t been assessed by the EPA yet, but last year’s car, while with fewer horsepower, eked out 190 miles of range on our 75-mph real-world highway route, which aligned with the Audi e-tron luxury SUV but behind the Tesla Model 3 Long Range sedan, which managed 230 miles. For more information about the Polestar 2’s efficiency and range, see the EPA’s website.

2024 Polestar 2 Interior

The 2’s interior combines wood, fabric, and plastic in an elegant yet simple manner. It appears modern, with clean lines, a minimalist color palette, and minimum switchgear. The 2 borrows a couple aspects from its Volvo cousins, including the steering-wheel buttons and knurled start knob, but the general design reads less crowded here. Polestar adorns the inside with eco-friendly vegan materials to complement the electric engine (though, you can get leather if you really want it). The power-operated liftgate opens to a not-so-cavernous cargo hold having 14 cubic feet of capacity. Want more? The trunk contains an additional cubic foot of storage space.

Inside, the driver is greeted by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an iPad-like portrait-orientation touchscreen. The latter measures 11.2-inches and performs the majority of operations while running Google’s Android Automotive OS. It differs little from other contemporary interfaces: Picture a box separated into four squares, each devoted to a particular type of apps, whether it navigation, phone, or audio.

Polestar believes that by placing similar apps in a specific corner of the screen. Users will have an easier time locating what they need, hence reducing distraction. But what’s really fantastic about this whole thing is that it makes Google Maps the integrated nav system. And provides useful EV-specific information to the driver, such as where the local charging stations are and how long you’ll have to sit there once you arrive. Additionally, there are two USB ports in the front and two USB ports in the rear. Satellite radio is standard, and Harman/Kardon provides the audio.

2024 Polestar 2 Features for Safety and Driver-Assistance

Numerous driver-assistance and safety systems are included on the Polestar 2, which should provide further piece of mind. For additional information about the Polestar 2’s crash-test results, see the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety characteristics include:

2024 Polestar 2 Maintenance and Warranty Coverage

Polestar’s limited warranty conforms to the industry standard and is comparable to Tesla‘s. Additionally, the company offers competitive coverage for the electrical components of the 2. Surprisingly, Polestar doesn’t offer the same three-year comprehensive maintenance program as Volvo, its parent firm.

2024 Polestar 2 Update

This morning, Polestar announced the forthcoming Polestar 2 sedan for the 2024 model year. Which will have enhancements that go well beyond the superficial. In addition to a redesigned front end to match that of its SUV sibling. The Polestar 3, the 2024 Polestar 2 will include upgraded batteries and motors, resulting in increased power and acceleration. In addition, the latest Polestar 2 will be the brand’s first vehicle with rear-wheel drive. Contributing to the EV’s best range to date.

Polestar ($PSNY) is a relatively young EV automaker that just capped off a successful 2022 by achieving its delivery target of 50,000 EVs. These sales were led by its first all-electric model, the Polestar 2 “fastback.”

Review

The Polestar 2 debuted as a 2021 model three years ago and its popularity has continued to rise since then. Late in 2022, the total number of units sold topped 100,000 in 27 distinct markets. Multiple variants, including the Long Range Single Motor (FWD) and the 2023 Dual Motor, have been tested by us. We just toured San Francisco in the show BST Edition 270 and had a blast.

While the Polestar has supplied the 2 in a number of powertrains and continues to enhance its technologies over-the-air and via extra model years, the carmaker has yet to offer a rear-wheel drive version of any of its EVs.

With today’s announcement, a RWD Polestar 2 will soon be available as a 2024 model, and it will include much of the same design elements as the brand-new Polestar 3 due out this year. Check out the first official photographs of the 2024 Polestar 2. Observe the revised front end?

RWD and a 30-mile increase in range are added to the Polestar 2 in 2024.

Design Update

Earlier today, Polestar released information on its 2024 model year 2 model. Highlighting some of the interior and exterior enhancements the all-electric fastback will have. Unlike many yearly EV updates (ahem, Nissan LEAF). The most recent Polestar 2 received major upgrades, beginning with its front grill.

The Polestar 2 will receive a revamped front end in 2024 that “sees” rather than “breathes.” This “SmartZone” design has recently appeared on the upcoming Polestar 3, marking a new design language for the EV brand in the future. SmartZone is comprised of many forward-facing sensors, a forward-facing radar, heating wires, accelerometers, and ultrasonic sensors that function as a “smart eye” for safety technology.

This model year facelift delivers a tremendous amount more than sensors on the front end. Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, elaborated:

Typically, in the automobile business, a facelift includes cosmetic visual alterations that damage the car’s original design concept. With the new model year Polestar 2, we rather dived below the surface and upgraded substantial tech and mechanical components of the electric drivetrain. This is the best Polestar 2 to date, and with the redesigned front design and SmartZone, it is also the most attractive.

Powertrains

According to Ingelath, the performance of the three most recent 2024 Polestar 2 variations will be enhanced by new batteries and revised powertrains, eliminating the previous FWD arrangement in favor of powering the back wheels.

As seen in the table below, Polestar’s new engine will raise power output from 231 to 299 horsepower. With the revised RWD layout, the 2024 Polestar 2’s 0-60 mph acceleration has cut off 1.1 seconds, down to 5.9 seconds.

The two Dual Motor models of the Polestar 2 are now rear wheel biased (main drive source), resulting in a rebalanced arrangement and torque ratio. The outcome is increased overall economy and performance, especially in terms of horsepower, torque, and acceleration.

Future Polestar 2 drivers will soon be able to deactivate the front motor when it is not required, increasing the vehicle’s range and fuel economy. Using this new function, the Dual Motor Polestar 2 can now attain the same range as the 2023 Single Motor edition (up to 270 miles).

Finally, the new RWD Single Motor Polestar 2 receives a slightly larger battery pack, allowing for an all-electric range of up to 300 miles (compared to 270 in 2023 FWD version). Examine the detailed comparison of features listed below.

Performance Pack

Other new features include updated 20-inch forged alloy wheels that match the look of the Polestar 3 in the Performance Pack, and Driver Awareness systems that are now standard. In North America, for instance, the Pilot Pack will now be standard on both Dual Motor models of the 2024 Polestar 2.

In addition, any Performance Pack upgrades now include the Plus Pack automatically. Also the Brembo brakes, 20-inch forged alloy wheels. Ohlins Dual Flow Valve dampers, software upgrade, and trademark gold seat belts. The Performance Pack includes a Harman Kardon premium sound system and panoramic glass roof.

2024 Polestar 2 News

For the 2024 model year, Polestar has given its Polestar 2 EV a facelift and made additional changes. The manufacturer of the fastback electric vehicle has increased its range (up to 300 miles per charge) and installed more potent motors. In addition to releasing a rear-wheel drive variant, the company is implementing a number of smaller modifications, such as making wireless phone charging and driver awareness features standard.

Design

The most noticeable modification to the new Polestar 2 is a new flat front grille that resembles the appearance of the automaker’s most recent Polestar 3 SUV. This new grille, dubbed “SmartZone” by Polestar. Contains components and sensors utilized for the car’s enhanced safety and driver assistance systems. SmartZone consists of a camera, midrange radar, accelerometers, ultrasonic sensors. And heating wires to prevent freezing in colder regions, something this Swedish automaker should be all too familiar with.

The single-motor RWD model of the Polestar 2 now has a maximum range of 300 miles (calculated by the EPA). An increase over the 270-mile range of the FWD model debuted in the United States last year. This improvement is mostly due to the addition of a battery pack. That has increased in size from 78kWh to 82kWh. At suitable stations, the larger battery pack may be charged at a quicker 205kW rate (up from 155kW).

Performance

The car’s performance has increased as well due to a new permanent magnet motor capable of 299 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque. Compared the FWD’s 231 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. The RWD is quicker now, too. With a 5.9 second zero to 60mph acceleration (down from 7.0 seconds) (reduced from 7.0 seconds).

The RWD’s new battery is also more ecologically friendly, according to Polestar. The company argues that the new pack has superior cell chemistry that lowered carbon emissions from seven tons per car to 5.9. Polestar is planning a comprehensive life cycle assessment of the battery pack later in 2023.

Oddly, the dual-motor all-wheel drive variants of the Polestar 2 don’t get the bigger battery, but they do boast a new drivetrain and efficiency improvements. The automobile now moves mostly on the new rear motor while the new front asynchronous motor kicks on for support. Compared to 408 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque, the system now generates 421 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque.

The new SmartZone grille (white) features a flatter appearance and additional sensors.

Engine

Some AWD Polestar 2s can have their performance enhanced by an over-the-air software upgrade called the Performance Pack. Once applied, it receives 455 horsepower of performance and can drive from zero to 60mph in 4.1 seconds. The previous model with the Performance Pack reduced the time from zero to sixty miles per hour from 4.5 to 4.2 seconds. Customers will receive the Plus Pack (usually $4,200) which adds creature amenities such as a heated steering wheel if the Performance Pack is applied to the vehicle at the time of purchase. In addition, they will be equipped with gold seatbelts and the new 20-inch wheel design found on the Polestar 3.

Matter of fact, much of the 2024 Polestar 2 enhancements. Including its front fascia modification and the incorporation of Smart Eye driver attentiveness tech (included as standard), come from the Polestar 3. However, the Polestar 2 lacks lidar as compared to the 3. (we asked). But the Polestar 2 now receives the Pilot pack with features like cross-traffic alert. And a 360-degree camera (usually $3,400) bundled with the dual-motor variant in North America.

Polestar, a joint venture between Volvo and the Chinese automaker Geely, has been one of the market’s most intriguing electric vehicle producers. Polestar is going public, is frequently likened to Tesla‘s successful Model 3, is being purchased by the tens of thousands for Hertz’s rental fleet. And is developing further variants. It’s taking some chapters from Tesla’s playbook, too. Tesla altered its Model S front grille in its fifth model year iteration as well in 2016. It presently manufactures automobiles in China, with intentions to expand to the United States by the middle of 2024.

Available

The 2024 Polestar 2 is available to buy now for delivery starting “later this year.” Some consumers may qualify for the federal tax credit of $7,500.
