2024 Subaru Impreza RS Compact Car Hatchback Specs Full Review

2024 Subaru Impreza RS. The Subaru Impreza enters its sixth generation with a streamlined portfolio that shifts its emphasis, removing the Premium and Limited trims and adds a new, more potent RS trim to the base model and the Sport. The RS receives the 182-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine featured in the Crosstrek, giving it an additional 30 horsepower and 33 pound-feet of torque compared with the other Impreza variants.

The style of the 2024 Impreza updates the same basic look. The grille grows taller and trades out chrome trim for a more understated black piece. More prominent rear wheel arches contribute to a sportier appearance. In addition, the rear taillights have been updated with a design that protrudes less into the back hatch. The RS model also gets an RS insignia to highlight its significance.

Features

Last year, when the third-generation WRX debuted, Subaru revealed that the WRX would only be available as a sedan. Now, the firm has decided to make the sixth-generation Impreza a hatchback only, further distinguishing the two models. The hatchback accounted for 73 percent of Impreza sales in 2022, according to a representative who talked with Car & Driver.

Subaru has upgraded its EyeSight driver-assistance technology for the Impreza so that it now recognizes cyclists and pedestrians faster and has a broader field of view. The redesigned Impreza attempts to provide more comfort by reducing cabin noise and introducing allegedly more supportive front seats. Subaru will equip the Impreza with its 11.6-inch vertical center display, bringing the vehicle in line with the rest of the lineup. Previously, the Impreza’s largest infotainment display was eight inches.

2024 Subaru Impreza RS Engine

The Base and Sport trim levels return with the same 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine again delivering 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Subaru will no longer provide the five-speed manual transmission, just the CVT. We would normally mourn the loss of a manual transmission, but the five-speed was so imprecise that it will not be missed. The Sport and RS models will be equipped with paddle shifters and a simulated “manual mode” that allows drivers to select from eight preset gear ratios. The basic all-wheel drive has been improved with a new active torque vectoring system. Subaru also says that the 2024 Impreza has 10 percent higher structural rigidity because to a revised, lighter inner frame.

A Comeback of the RS

Subaru‘s decision to reinstate the RS badge and equip the Impreza with the Crosstrek’s 182-hp, 2.5-liter engine is a pleasant one. In our testing, this engine pushed the Crosstrek to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, while the Impreza’s 152-hp 2.0-liter engine took just under nine seconds.

Apart from increased power, the 2024 Subaru Impreza RS has various aesthetic tweaks to help separate it from the other trims. There are RS emblems on the front doors and rear hatch. The RS replaces the side mirrors and rocker panel molding with black versions. The interior features faux carbon and gunmetal accents. The front seats are upholstered in black fabric with red bolsters, while the steering wheel and shifter have been changed to leather. The carpeted floor mats are embroidered with the RS logo.

It’s still no thrill-seeking hot hatchback, but thankfully Subaru gave it a little more kick. Subaru hasn’t revealed any pricing data yet, but the 2023 model starts at $20,815 and we believe the newer vehicle to come at a little raise from that. According to Subaru, the 2024 Impreza will go on sale beginning in the spring.

2024 Subaru Impreza RS News

The 2024 Subaru Impreza ushers in the sixth generation of the manufacturer’s compact car. Appropriately, it makes its introduction at this year’s LA Auto Show, where the first generation made its debut in 1992. The 2024 Subaru Impreza is available in three trim levels: Base, Sport, and RS. The 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine in the Base and Sport models generates 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The RS is equipped with a four-cylinder, 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 182 horsepower (136 kilowatts) and 178 pound-feet of torque (241 Nm).

All trims include a CVT. The variant in the Sport and RS grades has a simulated 8-speed mode with pre-set ratios and paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. All-wheel drive continues to be standard on the Impreza. According to Subaru, this use of the technology has a quicker response time. In addition, the system incorporates torque vectoring.

The sixth-generation Impreza is only available as a five-door hatchback, whereas the fifth-generation additionally includes a four-door sedan. The outside design is a development of the existing style. The grille is slightly bigger, and the headlamps give a more angular appearance. The modifications at the back are more visible with fork-shaped taillights and exposed exhaust pipes.

Changes are more dramatic on the interior. The 2017 Impreza features an 11.6-inch infotainment display with a portrait orientation. It supports the wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto versions. Similar to the Outback and Legacy, lower grades include two 7-inch displays. The 2024 Impreza receives a version of the WRX’s dual-pinion electronic power steering rack for a more engaging driving experience. According to Subaru, this results in increased responsiveness and a more direct steering feel.

The Impreza receives an upgraded version of Subaru‘s EyeSight driver assistance technology. It can detect bicycles and pedestrians at junctions and has a broader field of view. Automatic emergency steering is added to vehicles equipped with blind-spot detection with lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert.

The RS is a new addition to the Impreza portfolio and a sporty model. Its name harkens back to the 2.5 RS from ’98. This grade features dark gray accents on the grille, side sills, mirror caps, and 18-inch wheels for a more aggressive appearance. For this grade, LED headlights and fog lights are standard. The inside seats are black fabric with red bolsters. The trim is a combination of gunmetal gray and faux carbon fiber.

This April, the 2024 Impreza will start on sale in the United States. Pricing information will be revealed closer to the model’s release date.

Update

Subaru introduced the sixth generation Impreza at the LA Auto Show in 2022, completing a complete circle since its 1992 introduction. The sporty AWD hatchback has several design, performance, safety, and multimedia technology enhancements. New for the 2024 model year is the RS variant, which features a 2.5L engine, 18-inch wheels, and cosmetic and interior upgrades.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is available in Base, Sport, and RS trim levels. The 2.0L BOXER four-cylinder engine in the Base and Sport variants produces 152 horsepower (113 kilowatts) and 145 pound-feet of torque (197 Newton-meters). The range-topping RS is powered by a 2.5L BOXER engine that generates 182 horsepower (136 kW) and 178 lb-ft of torque (241 Nm).

All versions come standard with a modified Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and a Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). However, the Sport and RS also feature an eight-speed manual mode with preset ratios and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Subaru claims that the updated drivetrain with standard Active Torque Vectoring provides a quicker response, more agile handling, and enhanced cornering. Check out our feature on this wicked, street-legal 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Coupe with a JDM WRX STI swap and 470 hp at 1.4 bar of boost pressure for a genuine RS.

The new Subaru Impreza is exclusively available as a five-door hatchback, unlike the previous model, which also offered a sedan body style. The company has modified the exterior design adding a bit more prominent grille and sharper headlamps. The rear modifications are more evolutionary, with taillights shaped like forks and exposed exhaust pipes.

The inside improvements are more obvious compared to outside alterations, thanks to the availability of the brand’s Starlink 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The low-end variants come with a pair of 7.0-inch monitors.

Security Measures

Subaru‘s award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist suite is featured on the 2024 Impreza, along with an expanded field of view, better control software, and an electric brake booster. The new safety technology recognizes bicycles and pedestrians at intersections faster than ever before and alerts the driver or applies the brakes automatically to prevent a collision. Under 50 mph, the Automatic Emergency Steering with Blind-Spot Recognition, Lane Keep Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert prevents collisions. In addition, the back seat reminder is a standard feature on all models.

The Impreza is a preferred pick among individuals and families due to its unwavering commitment to passenger safety. The vehicle has received the Top Safety Pick award for the previous fifteen years (2007-2022). With increased body stiffness and a reduced curb weight, the 2017 Impreza will earn praise from the IIHS once more. The new RS adds a touch of sportiness to the Impreza with its more aggressive design, highlighted by dark gray accents on the grille, side sills, mirror caps, and 18-inch wheels. It is named after the 1998 2.5 RS and comes equipped with LED headlights and fog lights. There are black fabric seats with red bolsters in the inside.

In addition, the Impreza RS features an upgraded leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, aluminum alloy pedals, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a Power Moonroof, and a 10-way power front driver seat with lumbar support. Also standard are Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
