Acura ZDX What’s New in Next Year

Acura is starting its voyage into an electric coming decades by bringing back an old name: ZDX. Unlike the original ZDX, which introduced for the 2010 model year with avant-garde fastback styling, the new 2024 ZDX SUV will have a more traditional two-box SUV shape. The Precision EV Concept, which debuted at the Monterey Car Week event in 2022, foreshadowed the new SUV. The styling of the concept is intriguing, with a floating roof, smooth body sides, and a light-up grille. The interior incorporates elements that we believe the production car will be unable to replicate, such as a narrow yoke-style steering wheel and a translucent infotainment system. The ZDX is the result of a collaboration between Acura‘s parent company Honda and General Motors; the ZDX will use GM’s Ultium battery. According to previous reports, the 2024 Acura ZDX will be manufactured alongside the Cadillac Lyriq SUV at GM’s Springhill, Tennessee assembly plant. That hints at what will power the ZDX: a rear-mounted electric motor with 340 horsepower in base trim, with a 500-hp, all-wheel drive variant available as an upgrade—possibly wearing a Type S badge.

What Is New in 2024?

One of Acura‘s most daring vehicles has returned! Yes, the ZDX nameplate comes back just over a decade after the sportback SUV was discontinued in the United States. Unlike that style-first SUV, the new 2024 Acura ZDX will share less with the MDX, and more importantly, it will be the brand’s first production electric vehicle.

For the 2024 model year, the ZDX nameplate will be attached to Acura‘s first all-electric SUV offering.

If the ZDX line follows the trim levels of Acura‘s gasoline-powered vehicles, we can expect a range of models with advancing technologies and performance. The Type S will most likely be the top-of-the-line model, and we’re excited to see what an electric version of Acura‘s well-known performance trim can do.

Electric Vehicle Motor, Power, and Performance

If the Cadillac Lyriq, the ZDX’s unexpected platform-mate, is any indication, we can expect rear- and all-wheel drive engine and transmission options ranging from 340 to 500 horsepower. Acura has confirmed the existence of a ZDX Type S, which could be the all-wheel drive variable with the higher horsepower rating. No details have been released as of yet, but we’ll learn more when the ZDX goes on sale.

Battery Life, Range, and Charging

The 2024 Acura ZDX will likely use GM’s Ultium battery technology and the same 102.0-kWh battery pack as the Lyriq. The Cadillac‘s battery is said to provide up to 312 miles of driving range, so the Acura should provide a similar figure.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort

The interior of the production ZDX is expected to be more conservative than that of the Precision EV Concept car. The concept’s yoke-style steering wheel will almost certainly be replaced by a standard, circular one. A two-row seating configuration is likely, and we anticipate premium interior components and potentially some eco-friendly textiles to boost the ZDX’s green appeal.

Connectivity and infotainment

Although the transparent display screens on the concept vehicle look cool and futuristic, we believe the production ZDX will have a more regular infotainment screen and digital gauge display. What we don’t know yet is whether the ZDX will use Acura‘s current software interface, which is controlled by a touchpad, or a version of General Motors’ new Google-based system. In any case, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity are likely to be standard, as is Acura‘s signature ELS stereo system.

2024 Acura ZDX Type S

That’s right, the Type S badge is expected to appear on the all-electric ZDX. A 2024 ZDX Type S with two motors will have AWD and may have more than 500 hp, similar to the Blazer EV in SS trim. No ZDX will be slow, but in MotorTrend testing, the Type S model could reach 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds. We can hardly wait to find out.

Of course, the improved performance will be accompanied by visual updates that set the ZDX Type S apart from less powerful models. Massive 22-inch wheels, sportier front and rear fascias, and a slew of Type S badges inside and out could all be part of the package.

2024 Acura ZDX Price

Acura hasn’t revealed pricing for the 2024 ZDX, but we expect it to be in the high $50,000 range. With options, a fully loaded ZDX Type S could cost well over $70,000. That appears to be expensive, but it is in line with the competition.

2024 Acura ZDX EV

Acura does not slingshot to the forefront of those deciding between a Tesla, Polestar, or a plethora of other EV offerings in the electric vehicle ecosphere. That may be about to change, as Honda‘s premium division is working on a crossover based on the GM-owned Prologue SUV.

Acura has resurrected an older nameplate for its first electric vehicle, naming it the ZDX (yes, very imaginative), and our sources say it will feature bodywork inspired by the brand’s recent Precision EV concept. What about the rest of the information? Let’s take a look at an example of what we can expect.

Acura Design’s Future

Acura‘s move to 2024 Acura ZDX EV propulsion heralds a new design direction for the company. The Acura Precision concept foreshadowed the ZDX, which embodies the brand’s ‘precision-crafted performance’ design ethos, blending deeply sculptured surfacing with dynamic lines.

The front is dominated by a backlit diamond pentagon grille, as well as intricately carved hood bulges and facia scallops that shape the cooling ducts and headlights. The most noticeable feature is the contrasting floating roof, which, when combined with the lower body color section, gives the impression of a futuristic powerboat. A large charging port is situated conveniently ahead of the driver’s side door.

A full-width (particle glitch) LED light cluster and wraparound glass that neatly intersects with the side quarter windows can be found on the back end. A deep tailgate contributes to the practicality equation, and a prominent upper ledge gives the vehicle a monolithic appearance.

Under the Surface

While much of the interior has remained a mystery, we do know it will have a frameless infotainment screen with physical knobs and a dark upper environment to emphasize its sporting credentials – much like its Honda counterparts. Passenger and cargo volume will be similar to that of its Honda sibling, with a long 3093mm wheelbase (121.77 Inches).

There will be a plethora of driver assistance and convenience features available. One big unknown is whether Honda will be able to use a rebranded version of GM’s Super Cruise, a Level 2 system that allows for hands-free driving on certain highways.

Accelerated Propulsion

The powertrain of the ZDX can be found in Chevrolet‘s Blazer EV, which shares its BEV3 platform (GM Ultium battery architecture). For comparison, the Blazer SS has 557 horsepower and standard dual-motor all-wheel drive for a 0-60 mph time of less than 4.0 seconds. This configuration may be used in the already declared flagship ZDX S-Type.

Intriguingly, for lower-spec variants, the platform can offer powertrain configurations in both front and rear-wheel drive. While outputs have yet to be confirmed, we anticipate that they will begin around 340 horses, with Acura likely offering only rear- and all-wheel drive models.

Although the battery capacity is still unknown (most likely 100 kWh), we anticipate a range of up to 320 miles (510 km). DC fast charging can deliver electrons at a rate of 195 kW to those on the go.

Rivals and the Uncovering

The 2024 Acura ZDX EV, like its Prologue sibling, will be manufactured by General Motors at its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant, which also produces the Cadillac Lyriq.

Tesla‘s Model Y, Polestar 3, BMW iX, Audi Q6 e-Tron, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, and Jaguar i-Pace are among the key competitors. The ZDX will be revealed as a 2024 model-year offering in the coming months, with pre-orders beginning soon after. Pricing is unknown at this time, but it is expected to range from the high $50,000s for base models to the mid-to-high $70,000s for the Type S.
