Active Glide, like Super Cruise, is restricted to operating only on divided roads and uses navigation maps to enforce this restriction. Lincoln and Ford are now using ordinary street maps, whereas GM teamed with Ushr to create a library of high-resolution maps of more than 200,000 miles of highways that includes road geometry.
When Super Cruise-equipped vehicles approach a curve in the road at a speed deemed unsafe, the technology automatically reduces speed and resumes it after the curve. Active Glide has less information, therefore it requests that the driver take control until the route becomes straighter. This is problematic when paired with the Lincoln user interface.
Super Cruise incorporates a light bar in the steering wheel that changes from blue to green to red when the driver needs to take control, making it impossible to miss. The Active Glide interface in the instrument cluster is primarily blue, and its driver takeover messages are a bit too subtle. Active Glide is likewise inferior to Super Cruise. Five times during 30 miles of interstate driving in the Phoenix region, the system prompted me to take the wheel.
Another fault in the system was the decision to omit capacitive sensors that immediately detect hands on the steering wheel from the steering wheel. Instead, Ford and Lincoln use torque sensors, just like Tesla. Even when employing the hands-on lane-centering option, this gave far too many false positives indicating no hands on the wheel for drivers who hold the wheel steady.
